Claudia Jones -Trinidad and Tobago – (1915-1964)
Claudia Jones, born Vera Cumberbatch, is a journalist, feminist and Trinidadian communist. This civil rights activist is a descendant of Carribean slaves who first joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) before joining the Young Communist League in 1936, the youth branch of the American Communist Party. Expelled from the United States and then exiled to London, Claudia Jones created in 1958 in London the West Indian Gazette, an anti-racist and anti-imperialist magazine. During his lifetime she fought against the injustices and stigmatisation affecting Black people.
