Saint Josephine Bakhita -Sudan- (1869-1947)

Originally from Sudan, she experienced humiliation, physical and psychological suffering of slavery. When she was bought, she went to live in Italy where she pronounced her first vows with the Canossian Sisters in 1896. Sister Josephine lived 51 years of religious life, letting herself be led by obedience in her work humble and hidden but rich in authentic Charity and prayer. The “Black Mother” – Madre Moretta died on 8th February 1947. Giuseppina Bakhita was beatified on 17th May 1992 and canonised by the same Pope, John Paul II, on 1st October 2000.
