Co-founder of the Negritude Movement, Léon Gontran Damas was a member of parliament of French Guyana. Considering it essential to engage in the fight against racism and for the emergence of an international black consciousness, he worked at international level, both in politics and in literature. One of his major topics was the shame of assimilation.
